Ecology Worksheet #1

Ecology Lesson 1 – VC Bio Year 12

Wed 18th – Tues 24th February

Tasks

  1. Get a copy of the “Biodiversity and Classification” section of the Biozone workbook from your teacher (I have emailed the file).

  1. Watch the Biodiversity video I have posted at our blog site http://pangurubio.blogtown.co.nz.

  1. In pairs, read page 45 about NZ’s Biodiversity. On p46 are some related questions. Skip Qns 1 and 2 for now but answer all of Qn 3 – help each other find the answers from p45.

  1. p47 discusses global biodiversity and a number of other types of biodiversity. Read the information at the top of the page and use it to answer Qn1 and Qn2. Don’t do Qn3. You can work together to figure it all out but make sure you’re answering on your own sheets.

  1. p48-58 cover the Tree of Life with the 5 Kingdoms we discussed during class and the sub groups beneath each one. Remember that every single organism is classified (grouped) into one of these 5 kingdoms and then further classified into smaller and smaller groups below until it gets a special genus and species name (like Homo sapiens – that’s us humans, or Canus lupus – the domestic dog, Danaus plexippus – the monarch butterfly). This is called Binomial Nomenclature (bi=2, nom=name) – 2 names for every living thing. The Genus name comes first always with a capital letter, the species name comes second, always all lower case, and the whole genus and species names are typed in italics (or underlined if you are handwriting). These are important rules!!! Work your way through these pages, using the information provided on the pages to answer the questions. All the info is there – you just have to READ to find it!

  1. Classification System p59. This and the following p60 show you the classification system in action (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species). Complete the questions on p59 – hint: to complete the human classification in Qn1 a you will need to refer to p53 (Kingdom Animalia) and find the Phylum, Class and Order for humans. I have already told you the last two – Genus and Species.

  1. Try p61 Classification Keys. Have a go at this one. I am sure you will have used a key like this in Science somewhere along the way! You start at the top and ask the first question, answer yes or no and follow the questions along until you hit the bottom boxes where your organism is identified. We will go through this next lesson as it is an important skill.

Checklist

By next lesson you should have:

  • Completed p45-59 of the Biodiversity hand out

  • Emailed me your mnemonic to help you remember the classification system (eg kings play cricket on flat green surfaces)

  • Had a go at using a classification key

  • Emailed me if you have ANY questions!!

Hello Panguru Bio Students!

Welcome to our blog site.  I have only just created it so it will get more exciting as we go.

I’m having a few difficulties embedding the video file – I know you won’t be able to access youtube from your classroom computers so I’m trying to embed the video file here so it won’t send you to youtube – I’ll get it sorted ASAP!
